W Kimmel 8th on Springfield Mile

Great weekend at Springfield this past weekend! After ending up 4th fastest in practice, to my surprise, I felt that I had a top 10 car for qualifying. During my qualifying run, I completely messed up my turn 2 exit costing me valuable time. I ended up a disappointing 14th place. At the drop of the green flag, I thought someone had released Hurricane Bill over the Springfield mile. It took me 20+ laps to settle down and get in rhythm. During an early yellow when all the leaders decided to pit, we stayed out and gained valuable track position to restart in 3rd. This was good for me to be upfront with the lead pack where I evidentially got up as far as 2nd place before Uncle Frank and the #6 car passed which moved me to 4th position.  I made my pit stop around lap 40, changing 4 tires and fueling, returned to the track in 18th position. From there I worked my way back up through the field and finished 8th in my first ARCA dirt track start. I would like to thank the people would made this possible, especially the guys that worked hard yesterday including: Tony, Kevin, Turtle, John, Larry, Eric, Shawn, Lee, Frankie, Mark, Andy, Tim, Brian, Debbie, Darryl, Scott, Bob. Would also like to thank Clarksville Schwinn, Crosley Radios, WTW Enterprises, OMP, TEX, G-Force Racing, Roush Yates Used Parts and Ford Motor Company.

Speed 51’s 2009 Short Track Draft: Three Near Misses

The Ones We at 51 Thought Our Panel “Whiffed” On

A Speed51.com Original

Throughout the course of this week’s Short Track Draft here on Speed51.com, we’ve made a good number of football references when it comes to our panel’s top draft picks.  But we’re going to switch sports real quick to our National Pastime to describe a few racers that didn’t make it to the big draft board.

It’s baseball’s basic principle – three strikes and you’re out.  Our esteemed short track racing panel didn’t quite take notice of three drivers, leaving all three “struck out” of the Draft.  While 32 insiders voted for both the main Short Track Draft and the Underclassmen Draft, there were three shocks that we, the insiders of the Speed51.com Mafia, couldn’t believe didn’t make the cut.

But, there were some reasons that our panelists, upon further review, pointed to when it came to why these drivers didn’t quite make it onto the draft.  Were there more drivers that didn’t make it onto the Draft?  Of course…but these three were the biggest surprises of them all.  The rest that didn’t make it onto the Draft will be included in next week’s “Best of the Rest of the Short Track Draft” feature on Speed51.com.

Will Kimmel - Super Late Models / ARCA

We’ve talked a bunch about “bloodlines” in this year’s Short Track Draft, and here’s another driver that’s sure to make his family name visit victory lane for many more years.  Twenty-year-old Will Kimmel, son of ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Crew Chief Bill Kimmel and nephew of nine-time ARCA titlist Frank Kimmel, has already added Super Late Model Championships to the family mantle at a tough place to do so – Salem Speedway (IN).  In fact, he won his first SLM race in his first start. He’s a consistent threat on the short tracks in his SLM, but he’s even been competing well in the place his dad and uncle first made the Kimmel name famous – ARCA.  He had a strong run going Daytona earlier this year, only to get caught up in one of the numerous “big ones.”

Here’s another kid whose age cost him a shot at the Draft.  Even though he’s 20, some of our panelists still thought he was under the age of 18, giving him Underclassmen votes instead of putting him in with the over-18 bunch.  That undoubtedly was the deciding factor for not having him as part of the top-51 picks.

Pros: Kid’s got the look of a champion already.  He’s tall, good looking and well-spoken – a marketing dream.  Plus he’s got a dad and uncle in his corner that can teach him how to win on short tracks and speedways alike.

Cons: Limited funding prevents him from running a more consistent ARCA schedule.  If the economy has limited his nine-time champ Uncle Frank’s efforts, it’s sure to affect Will’s, too.

Third-Generation Kimmel Making His Mark; Will Kimmel Featured Guest on '30 at 30' Thursday
kimmelwillcandid09.jpgTOLEDO OH (3-4/5-09) - Since 1953, three generations of ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers have been barnstorming across America entertaining race fans far and wide.

And none more renowned arguably than the Kimmel racing family, which, via the family patriarch Bill Kimmel, Sr., has been winning races here since the 1960s.

While nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel has chalked up 74 career victories - second all-time only to Iggy Katona's 79 - the third-generation of Kimmel's are now upon us.

Enter Will Kimmel, son of Frank's brother and crew chief Bill Kimmel, who lit up the charts this year at Daytona Int'l Speedway with an impressive performance all the way through.

Although an 18th place finish was not exactly what he was wishing for, the experience left an indelible mark on the 20-year-old rising star.

"I'm just so happy that I ever got the chance to do it at all (race at Daytona)," said Will.

"I learned that I was one of just a handful of third-generation drivers to race at Daytona and one of the first to have two generations in the same race.

"I was pretty nervous. This was a really big deal for me and my family. Just to take the green flag was so huge. I know a lot of people may not understand that. Despite our bad luck in the race, we still had a really good week.

"I remember looking in the mirror on one of the restarts and seeing my Uncle Frank right behind me; it was hard to get my arms around everything that was happening, but it was really neat."

Not only did he qualify eighth among 54 teams, he also topped the speed charts in happy hour.kimmelwillcarshotdaytona09.jpg

"We had one of the fastest Fords in the field, which was really good for Ford Motor Company.

"I didn't go as hard as I wanted to. I was being conservative hanging out in the back of the fast cars. I was bidding my time. I wasn't bump-drafting. I wasn't putting myself in a bad position or crowding anyone."

Admittedly, having never raced at Daytona, he didn't know exactly how good his car was.

"I definitely didn't know how the good the car was. I could suck up to anyone; I know that. Buescher, Lofton; they were probably the fastest cars, but, based on what I could determine, I think we had a top-four car for sure."

Unfortunately, he, like a lot of drivers, got caught up in one of the multi-car wrecks that left his no. 68 Tim Dugger-Green Oak Farms-Clarksville Schwinn Cyclery Ford fairly wrinkled up. It also cost him 18 laps in the pits while his crew made repairs.

"We had some grill tape blow off early in the race and the car got real tight. But we took care of that, and the car was unbelievable from there. Wrecking or not, we had a really good week. It wasn't as bad as it could have been."

So what's next for the third-generation racer? Talladega?

kimmelwillcandid.jpg"We're throwing it around, but we're also trying to concentrate on Kimmel Racing and doing the very best job for Ansell and Menards. There's a chance I could race, but we're really focused more on Frank's program at the moment. I'm still Frank's jackman, so I have an obligation to the team.

"I'm definitely going to get back in a late model," added the 2007 Salem Speedway Late Model track champion.

Even if he doesn't climb back in his ARCA car in 2009, he's got plenty to keep him busy. For one, Will operates a fulltime lawn care service and attends Indiana University Southeast part-time and spends his share of time in the Kimmel Racing shop helping as necessary.

"I'm working hard at staying in shape. I'm playing on a basketball league on Monday nights and a volleyball league on Wednesday nights. I also try and run two miles two or three times a week and workout in the gym when I can. By Thursday, it's usually time to leave for the track (during racing season)."

Will is certainly clear on his future aspirations.

"I definitely want to drive racecars; there's no doubt about that. I like working on cars; I don't have a problem with it, but I'd much rather do what Frank's doing. I try and pattern myself on how he handles himself. Like a lot of people, I really admire him; I'm no different there. Everything he's done in this sport is something to be admired. The patience he has on the track is unbelievable. He's so good at it, and you just don't realize how hard it is until you do it. Me and Frank, we really get along. He's been a really cool uncle to me."

Will's father Bill, an accomplished race driver himself in his day, is an eight-time Cometic Crew Chief of the Year in ARCA RE/MAX Series competition.

"Me and dad, we yell, fight and carry on. We have our moments, butt heads - five minutes later, we're fine.

"We work really well together; I'm very lucky. Most kids don't get the chance to be as close with their parents as I am. We spend a lot of time together at the track, and it's great.

"Last year, I was busting my butt trying to get a big job done (lawn car business). I was trying to get done in time to go to New Jersey. My dad knew I was behind the eight-ball and he came out and helped me finish the job.

"As far as father and son go, we're really good friends. Yah, we get into it; but it's nothing we haven't been through before, and certainly nothing we can't work through."

Will Kimmel will be the featured guest on "30 at 30" at arcaracing.com Thursday, March 5 at 3:30 PM ET.

"30 at 30", a live on-line chat show at arcaracing.com, airs Monday through Friday at 3:30 PM ET featuring a different personality each day from the world of the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Daytona Recap:

This past week was an experience that I will never forget and I want to thank all of those people that made it possible.  From qualifying 8th out of 54 cars on Friday, we then turned around on and ended up fastest in happy hour later that day.  In happy hour the drafting was a new experience that I have never been exposed to.  The Ford Fusion was very good and would pull up very well.  The race day experience at Daytona Speedway was somewhat overwhelming with all the drivers meetings, autograph sessions, and all the fans along with the anticipation of finally getting to the start of the race.

We started the race 4th row outside, and knew that I needed to get to the inside line as soon as possible as it was the fastest line around the speedway.  I had fallen back to about 15th spot before I found an opening in the inside lane, as my spotter had cleared me to get in line and ride for a while.  I passed a few cars and slowly moved up to the top 10 driving thru a couple of wrecks that reminded much of a “Days of Thunder” scene.  We made a pit stop around the 38th lap, returned to the track in about 14th position, ready to race to the end.  After the green flag waved, I started to get back to the front when all “-----“ broke loose entering turn three.   At that time all I could do was to drive to the apron of the race track to try and avoid the spinning cars.  As I got to the apron of the track I thought for a moment that I might have the wreck cleared, when someone hit a spinning car that knocked him off the banking, down on the apron and clipped my right front as I drove by.  After loosing 18 laps repairing the car, I was able to get back on the track to finish the race.

The final 22 laps was run without a right front fender, made another pit stop to practice getting in and out of pit row, and still finished 18th.  Not bad for all the adversity of the day.

I would like to thank all of those who helped me including the Roush Fenway over the wall crew, Roush Yates engines, Bernie Marquis and Tim Duerr from Ford Racing, Racetracker software, GlobalTECH and Airtech, my spotter, “Tony”, did an awesome job.

Special thanks to Clarksville Schwinn & Fitness, Green Oak Farms, Tim Dugger and all the local supporters that made this possible for me.

 Thanks again,

 Will

KIMMEL VS. KIMMEL?

"Frank Kimmel to race against nephew Will in ARCA opener at Daytona"

...Next Saturday, there is always the opportunity that both Kimmels will be batting each other for the win at Daytona.

If a situation like that occurs, each driver has a pretty good idea what he is going to do.

“If I’m behind him. I’m going to try to help him. If I’m leading and he goes for the win, there are going to be some issues going home,” Will said chuckling.

3-Days of Testing Wraps up at Daytona; Kimmel, Sheltra Quickest Overall......

kimmelwillcandid.jpgDAYTONA BEACH FL (12-21-08) - On the heels of a race event title sponsorship announcement, the ARCA RE/MAX Series wrapped up a three-day open test at Daytona Int'l Speedway over the weekend during which 62 drivers participated in preparation for the 46th annual and newly-named Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 coming Saturday, February 7th, 2009.

Several series regulars, an abundant collection of newcomers and an interesting combination of big names shared headlines throughout the open test under sunny skies and high temperatures in the low 80s.

Morning and afternoon test sessions Friday, Saturday and Sunday were divided up in separate single car runs and separate drafting runs.

Among the drivers who tested in the single car runs, third-generation ARCA racer Will Kimmel, nephew of nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel, circled the "World Center of Racing" quickest overall with a time of 49.730 seconds, for an average speed of 180.977 mph.

Kimmel, in the no. 44 Kimmel Racing Ford Fusion, attributed his on-track performance to, "Ford" and "an experienced crew."

"Where There's a Will, There's a Way;

3rd Generation Kimmel Quickest in Day 3 at Daytona"

DAYTONA BEACH FL (12-21-08) - Blue skies and just a hint of ocean breeze awaited 39 ARCA RE/MAX Seriescompetitors as they took the green flag for Sunday morning's single car test session at Daytona Int'l Speedway. Chase Mattioli, Steve Blackburn, Joey Logano, Patrick Sheltra and Will Kimmel all broke the 180 mph barrier, but when the checkered flag flew at the end of the session, it was the no. 44 of Kimmel who circled the historic 2.5-mile superspeedway quickest. The nephew of nine-time series champion Frank Kimmel posted a top speed of 180.977 mph.

When asked why he was the fastest of the morning session Kimmel shouted, "F-O-R-D". Kimmel also credited his experienced crew for his Sunday morning success.

Quote from Will after Sunday's session:

"That lap would not have been good without my team and Roush-Yates engines. Seat time is so crucial and that was our main goal Sunday morning. I have to thank my dad (Bill), Larry and Erick who work in the shop and give their heart and soul into my racing career. They work in the shop ever day and without them this would not be possible."

"I also have to thank Andy Pennington and Bob Peters from Clarksville-Schwinn who really helped making this opportunity to test at Daytona possible. As far as the race is concerned, we're looking for sponsors and we hope to be back here in February."
